Saying goodbye to a pretty penny

As I See It

So much for a penny for your thoughts…

The government yesterday announced they’re not going to make pennies anymore. Once their stock of penny blanks runs out, that’s it.

It’s a penny pinching move, but since it costs three cents to make a new penny, it makes sense. That’s S-E-N-S-E. It could save about $56 million per year.

The penny has had a good run since the US Mint began minting them more than 230 years ago.

Unfortunately, our language may suffer for ending the penny. There’s the phrase a penny saved is a penny earned-a lesson in thrift and smart investing. Of course, if you’re in for a penny, in for a pound because it may take a few pounds of pennies to add up to enough money to buy something.

We’ll lose a way to protest, too. We won’t be able to express our displeasure in government by paying bills with a wheelbarrow, or more, full of pennies.

So now the lowest coin will be the nickel. Actually, they cost a pretty penny to make-about 14 cents each. The phrase pennywise and pound foolish may fit here.

Anyway, that’s my two cents on the matter.

As I see it, I’m Kevin Millard.
