NEW: Mississippi River bridge at Lansing stays closed

Published

The bridge between Lansing, Iowa and Crawford County, Wisconsin won’t be open for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

Iowa DOT officials said there isn’t a date for the 94-year-old bridge to reopen.

After sensors detected movement that exceeded safety thresholds, DOT officials closed the bridge over the Mississippi River last Sunday.

Once they confirmed the bridge had in fact moved, engineering teams have monitored and inspected the structure to form a plan on what repairs are needed to reopen the bridge.

The repair plan for the repairs isn’t finalized, so the bridge continues to be closed to traffic.

Until the bridge opens, drivers must use one of two crossings to get to either Iowa or Wisconsin. One set of bridges is in La Crosse or in Prairie du Chien.

The main channel of the Mississippi River is open to boat traffic.

Construction of a new bridge to replace the current one, won’t be complete until 2027.
