Roof improvements at La Crosse Center expected to cost over $50,000

The La Crosse Center just went through a big expansion project about five years ago, but the original arena from the 1980’s may need some work soon.

Problems with the arena roof were reviewed by the La Crosse Center Board on Tuesday. Building operations manager Josh Krenz tells the Center Board that leaks have occurred recently on the roof, and fixing the roofing material could carry a large price tag, of at least $50,000, according to quotes from roofers. Additional expenses could raise the price tag to around $70,000.

The current roof material was installed about 25 years ago, and may hold up for another decade. La Crosse Center director Jay Odegaard would like to see repairs happen soon. Odegaard is concerned that letting a decision wait for too long could delay the project until next year.

The center’s last major renovation project was an expansion in 2020. The roof work is likely to be discussed again next month, with the city council making the ultimate decision on where to draw money from in the city budget to pay for the project.

There should be no discussion other than where is the money coming from for the repairs.

No hand wringing necessary for this minor expenditure to keep up the $42 million dollar investment in the La Crosse Center. As a reminder to Brad Williams and the community….The previous City Council determined it appropriate to “donate” $250,000.00 of confiscated taxpayer money to provide a “safety net” for any airline(s) serving the La Crosse area. Even though airlines are worth billions as a company, give bonuses to administrative employees, are publicly traded selling shares of stock, and provide dividends to shareholders, the city leaders of La Crosse decided that airlines need a safety net in case they happen to lose money serving La Crosse. And just for good measure, the County of La Crosse did the same thing. That’s $500,000 taken from taxpayers to give to an airline. If they really can’t find the money to support the La Crosse centers roof, they have no business allocating money to an airline. How many local businesses are given such bailout funds in the event they lose money. The answer, none. The airline should not receive such money either.
