The heavy rain received in La Crosse early on Tuesday set a local rainfall record for May 20th, which had been set over a century ago.

The weather service office in La Crosse had measured 1.50 inches of rain before 10 a.m. Tuesday, which passed the previous record for the day of 1.46 inches. That mark had stood since 1913. Higher amounts had been reported by observers in towns such as La Farge and Gays MIlls.

Prior to Tuesday, La Crosse’s rain total for the month had been only 57-hundredths of an inch, and most of that fell on May 1st. Slight amounts of rain had been reported on three straight days last week. The total through Tuesday may still be below average for the month. The normal May rainfall in La Crosse, through May 19th, is 2.51 inches.

With 365 days in the year and over 100 years of record-keeping, wouldn’t some sort of “record” be established nearly every day of the year?

The wettest May 20th on record with an inch and a half of rain is not exactly breath-taking.
