Too many deaths and villains at the movies this summer

As I See It

As much as people claim to hate Hollywood, they still go to see movies and watch TV produced in L.A. But when I was searching for a movie to attend this weekend, I was getting frustrated with the offerings from Tinseltown.

I counted 12 different films showing at La Crosse’s Cinema theaters. and didn’t find much that interested me. They did have one animated film, and a movie based on the Minecraft game, but besides that, it was almost all action, and horror, and characters getting killed.

They’re still churning out “Final Destination” movies, coming up with bizarre ways for characters to die, because they’re destined to die. “Hurry Up,” a suspense thriller. “Clown in a Cornfield”…yeah, you know that’s horror. “Fight or Flight” promises assassins assigned to kill the heroes. “The Accountant” brings us “a ruthless network of killers.”

The one I ended up seeing was “Thunderbolts,” a new movie with Marvel heroes with a lot of goofy comedy. What I didn’t like was that it apparently is Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s turn to play a villain, and I didn’t want her in that role. It’s almost summer, so apparently no Oscar contenders are showing up until about Thanksgiving. I hope we get some good films soon, to give me a reason to go inside an air-conditioned theater in July.

I feel this so much I went through the exact same frustration trying to find a movie that wasn’t just another loud action flick or some over the top horror I miss the days when summer movies had a bit more heart and variety Sometimes you just want something uplifting or clever without all the death and destruction It’s exhausting when every character is either a villain or a victim I totally get not wanting to see someone like Julia Louis Dreyfus turned into another generic bad guy Here’s hoping we get some real gems later this year because I miss walking out of a theater actually feeling good…
