Mississippi River bridge at Lansing closed

The Iowa Department of Transportation said that the Mississippi River bridge crossing between Wisconsin and Lansing, Iowa is closed.
The Wisconsin State Patrol said the closure occurred just after midnight Sunday morning.
Clayton Burke, project manager for the new bridge project, said that there’s a monitoring system on the 94-year-old bridge. It detected that one of the piers moved or shifted beyond their safety threshold.
He said that they’re looking into the movement and the data from the bridge sensors.
An engineering firm then would analyze the data and the structure regarding its safety.
A decision on reopening the bridge comes after the firm makes it’s report.
Burke didn’t have a timeframe on when that might happen.
A post from the Iowa DOT late Sunday afternoon said that they expect more information by the end of the week. They’ll provide updates as soon as possible.
Construction work
The Iowa DOT is in the process of constructing a replacement for the bridge that opened in 1931.
In February 2024, construction work on the new bridge shifted the old one which forced a closure that lasted nearly two months.
A ferry service transported people across the river during part of that time until the bridge reopened.
A live camera view of the Black Hawk Bridge shows no traffic crossing the bridge on Sunday morning.
Until the bridge reopens, traveler have to use the next closest crossings in either La Crosse or Prairie du Chien.
