City opening shelters ahead of severe weather threat

With the possibility of severe weather this afternoon in the area, the City of La Crosse is opening up four park shelters and its parking ramps for people to stay safe from the storms.

The National Weather Service predicts a line of storms to move into the La Crosse area after 2 p.m. Strong winds and large hail are possible along with the potential of tornadoes east of the Mississippi River.

A Tornado Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. for the area.

To prepare, the shelters and ramps are open Thursday afternoon between 2-8 p.m.

  • -Copeland Park: 1001 Copeland Avenue
  • -Lueth Park: 700 12th Street North
  • -Wittenburg Park: 2940 George Street
  • -Haas Park:   3500 Easter Road

In addition, all City of La Crosse parking ramps are available as shelters during that same time.

The city is suspending its ordinance for Trespass to City Parking Facilities between 2-8 p.m. to allow anyone to use one of the ramps for protection from the weather.
