Adapted Physical Education students celebrate success at swim meet

Whether it was diving into the pool or doing the backstroke, the students who took part in Wednesday’s Adapted Physical Education Swim Meet at Logan High School were showing off their success and enjoying it, too.
There were plenty of smiles, cheers, and applause from parents, staff, and the students themselves in and around the pool.
More than 20 students from both Logan and Central high schools are in the class that meets weekly.
Jessa Ellenbecker, an Adapted Physical Education teacher for the district, said the weekly sessions throughout the school year began by building stamina then practicing their swimming skills.
She said they finally to see the results of those weekly lessons.
Part of the lesson each week involves teaching a student what types of equipment they can use in the pool, what works best for them, any modifications that can be made to help achieve success in the water.
“So when we get to the swim meet, seeing it all come together, is eye opening for them, for their parents, for all of us really.”
While the students showed off their skills in the water, there was also something else on display-their self-confidence.
“We’ve got water all around us. So giving them those tools if they were to end up in water and weren’t comfortable or needed to have that kind of rescue or safe space to go how they could do that for themselves,” she said.
Ellenbecker said the meet was live streamed and recorded, so students will get together in next week’s class, get some popcorn, and watch how far they’ve come over the past year.
