Wisconsin Sen. Baldwin calls for Health Secretary Kennedy, Jr., to be responsive to public needs

Federal health and human services secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., took questions from members of Congress on Wednesday about the country’s health needs. US Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) was among those seeking answers.

Baldwin challenged Kennedy on a decision to lay off staffers who worked on programs to reduce lead poisoning among children, mainly in the Milwaukee school system.

Before that hearing, Baldwin spoke online, saying that Kennedy needs to be held accountable, and his department hasn’t responded well to public complaints about lead exposure.

“I came to the conclusion that he was more interested in fringe conspiracy theories, and serving Donald Trump, than standing up for Wisconsin families,” Baldwin said, adding that the Trump White House fired the entire team working on the lead poisoning issue.

Kennedy told Baldwin, and the Senate committee, that lead poisoning is an “extremely significant concern,” and suggested that the department of health would spend money on the lead problem that has already been allocated for that purpose.

“It is the administration that is supposed to administer and implement what Congress passes,” Baldwin told reporters in the briefing before the committee hearing. “(Kennedy) cannot, on his own, he’s not empowered to just do these things…with a wave of the wand.”

Kennedy also fielded questions from other committee members, including Sens. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont)

Lead paint has been a known hazzard at least since the 1060s and the government banned lead paint in residential uses in the ’70s.

So, almost 50 years later, after spending billions on lead paint remediation efforts, Baldwin wants to continue to pour tax dollars on the problem government has been unable to solve in 5 decades.
Baldwin is a political dinosaur confusing spending money with getting results.
