NEW: The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office says the road between Nelson, Wisconsin and Wabasha, Minnesota is open again to traffic.

It took nearly six hours to clean up the debris after a BNSF train hit a semi just on the edge of Nelson.


The road between Nelson, Wisconsin and Wabasha, Minnesota is closed following a collision between a train and a semi by Nelson.

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office posted photos shortly after 9 a.m. showing the front of the BNSF locomotive and an aerial view of the scene.

In one picture, pieces of the trailer clinging to the front of the locomotive.

It appears that the train hit the rear portion of the trailer in the other photo. It is believed that the trailer contained fertilizer which was spilled over a large area after the collision.

The semi was coming from Minnesota into Nelson at the time.

“A prolonged closure is anticipated” at the crossing according to the sheriff’s office.

The nearest Mississippi River crossings are in Red Wing to the north or Winona to the south.
