La Crosse County supervisors make suggestions for improving La Crosse public schools

On Monday, it was La Crosse city officials getting together with La Crosse’s school superintendent. Two days later, a few La Crosse County Board members got the same chance to talk about education with Superintendent, Dr. Aaron Engel.

Monica Kruse was among a handful of county supervisors who sat down with Engel at the county office building, for the “visioning” session.

As she was entering the meeting, Kruse told reporters she didn’t quite know what to expect, “but it’s always a great idea, I think, when local entities cooperate, and I think the county is in a good position to support what the school district might want to do in the years ahead.”

Kruse said schools should provide moral education for students, while other board members spoke about communication skills and the need for adequate school funding.

Maureen Freedland said schools should show students how to think for themselves.

The superintendent met with La Crosse Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey and city council members Monday. More than a dozen visioning meetings have been planned by the school district.

3 out of 30 County Board Supervisors attended.

That shows how much interest there is in one governmental body telling another how to do their job. Engel calls countless meetings to later claim that he has taken endless input from the public.

But he doesn’t. On this site and others, the public tells him to cut spending because enrollment is down and will continue to be down, lowering state aid and requiring property tax increases. He should be willing to cut payroll but he isn’t. Secretly, he likes the current student-to-teacher ratio which lower enrollment allows.

Kruse states schools should teach morals. Whose morals?
What a crock by a county legislator.

Liberals want to teach our kids their vision of “morality” and “how to think.”

Parents should run, not walk, from public schools.
