La Crosse County Board could vote this week to oppose the closing of two north-side rail crossings

The fight in La Crosse to prevent state officials from shutting down two busy railroad crossings in the city is getting support from county leaders as well.

Later this week, the La Crosse County Board will be asked to pass a resolution calling on the Wisconsin DOT to drop its plans for closing two north-side rail crossings near the Amtrak depot. Closing the two crossings would leave just one street-level railroad crossing open in north La Crosse, which could cause traffic problems in that area. The county board has included that item on its Thursday night agenda.

Last week, the city council unanimously contested the state transportation department’s plan to shut down the crossing at Avon and Hagar Streets, along with the crossing at Liberty and St. Cloud Streets.

A resolution to be presented at the county board meeting says closing those two crossings would cause changes in traffic patterns. County officials call the request for closure “unreasonable” and “detrimental to public safety.”
