Community shows support for Stamp Out Hunger

A busy day at the La Crosse Post Office on Saturday as vehicle after vehicle brought what they collected in.

It wasn’t mail though. It was food donations made as part of the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Every year, letter carriers help organize drives nationwide drive collecting food and personal care items for their communities.

The post office downtown was the collection point for La Crosse.

Volunteers brought in the collected items which were weighed then sorted.

The Hunger Task Force and WAFER are distributing everything to area food banks and pantries.

Shelly Fortner, the Executive Director at the Hunger Task Force, said the need is great.

“We’re seeing about a 30-percent increase in what the pantries are asking for. They are seeing a 30-percent increase in their clients coming in, so the Hunger Task Force has to be ready. So, food drives like this will help immensely.”

She also said that summer is a busy time because school is out and extra meals are needed for those who use the pantries.

Fortner said this is the largest food drive that they have during the year.

She was very thankful for the volunteers who helped on Saturday. They couldn’t do what they do for the community without their help, Fortner said.

I listened to Rick Solem’s interview Friday with the organizer for the food drive. She stated that it was covering 546-zip codes. Knowing that covers a large area as far away as Alma, I texted ( because Rick doesn’t take calls anymore)to ask if Holmen was covered in the pick-up. No response and not addressed in the interview. So Friday I went to the store and bought a bag full of food and 7:00 the next morning I put it at the base of my mailbox. Just before dark I retrieved the bag so animals wouldn’t get into it. Wafer will still get the food, but I wish I could get reliable information from a formally trusted news source. Thanks Rick for wasting time on air trying to be a comic rather than getting out reliable info.
