We’re continuing with our coverage of the Freedom Honor Flight. The next stop on the tour of Washington DC were the Lincoln, Korean War, and Vietnam War memorials.

After watching the ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, the buses brought the veterans to the place that many wanted to see.

The Vietnam memorial was where Gary Seago of La Crosse came to see a friend.

“The sadness of all the dead people that are here. And I wanted to make the trip to see my friend’s name on the wall. That was the most exciting….and it’s just sad.”

Seago and Vernon Jacobs graduated in the Class of 1968 in Galesville.

Jacobs died in Quang Nam province in March 1969.  He was 19 years old.

The trip did have good moments for Seago. He brought his grandson Mike along so they could both experience all the memorials.

“Just walking through here and hearing all the different languages by different crowds around this whole thing… It’s just fabulous that we have that many visitors that come to see this remarkable place,” Seago said.

Visitors to the memorials also included honor flights from other states. While the Freedom Honor Flight veterans wore dark blue polo shirts, groups from Georgia and Connecticut wore bright blue t-shirts signifying their organizations.

Although they were from different parts of the country, there were times individual veterans spoke to one another about their service and the monuments they came to see that day.
