A Winona man is killed when he is struck by a car on Monday evening.

Winona Police said Gregory Stephen Ferriss, 54, of Winona was turning onto Liberty Street at the intersection with 6th Street just before 8 p.m. As he did so, he struck a bicyclist who was riding an e-bike east on 6th.

The man was lying face down and unconscious when police arrived.

Although officers then responders from the Winona Fire Department and Winona Area Ambulance Service tried life-saving efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim is identified as Michael John Ryan, 67, of Winona.

Police said their investigation found that alcohol or drugs weren’t a factor in the collision. The driver said the sun was in his eyes when he was making the turn.

Ryan wasn’t wearing a helmet when the crash happened, the statement from the police said.

The Minnesota State Patrol was called in to do an accident reconstruction as part of the investigation.
