A nationally-known artist, famous for designing murals, has been invited to visit La Crosse to work on a possible project for the city.

La Crosse’s arts board Tuesday discussed a plan for Lettie Jane Rennekamp of Portland, Ore., to come to the city and produce a mural.

Rennekamp’s murals often feature depictions of the human body, as well as plants. She’s being asked to meet with the arts board at its monthly session in June.

Board members say the city has $10,000 in funding for potential art projects, which has to be spent before the end of the year.

No location has been chosen for the proposed mural.

The project is being compared to the “Confluence” mural painted on the west wall of the Pump House more than 10 years ago.

The news comes a week after a new mural was dedicated on the exterior of the Family and Children’s Center on Monitor Street.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." Way to keep it local lacrosse. I’m aware of several artists that do murals and live here in La Crosse. Was a prerequisite for doing a mural in Lacrosse be that the artist live as far away from lacrosse as possible and still be a citizen of the United states?

There is a statue of the “LaCrosse Players” indiginous people at the north hwy 53 entrance to the City. Visiters are treated to a “welcome” statue that hasn’t seen any maintenance from the City since it was installed 20 years ago. Its filthy, the lights illuminating the statue havent worked for years and they are choked with dead bugs and by midsummer it will be enveloped in weeds. How about taking some of that money burning a hole in their pocket and using it to maintain the “art” they already have.
