‘Greenway’ along King Street would be extended to the riverfront, under plan passed by La Crosse city committee

A La Crosse city council committee has approved a downtown extension to a project aimed at encouraging pedestrian and bike travel through town.
The council’s finance committee has voted to use nearly $600,000 in capital project funding for the King Street greenway project, part of the city’s bike-pedestrian plan.
The extension would authorize the installation of signs and pavement markings on King Street, from the riverfront to 7th Street, with the goal of getting more people to use what would be considered a “slow street,” which would be safer than many other streets through the city.
Similar work has already been done from 7th Street east to the UWL campus area at 22nd Street. The greenway plan goes to the full council next week.

So, the City (property tax payers) are paying almost $100,000 per city block for installing new signs and pavement markings for pedestrian and bike travel?
That is crazy. Just crazy.

Pay attention the next time you are driving down the street and count how many people you actually see walking on the sidewalk. The university is probably the exception to this conversation.
Instead of expensive bike lanes, why can’t the city adapt what other cities do with their sidewalks.
Make one sidewalk for pedestrians and the other side of the street sidewalk for bikes.
The sidewalks are already in place and are paid for.
Some cheap signs will help designate pedestrians and bicyclists.
Do a Channel 8 and 19 news story to help bring awareness and call it a day.
A few new signs should not cost anywhere near $600,000 and the sidewalk is already there and paid for.
In Florida, quite a few cities have a sign on all their sidewalks saying its is a shared path and please respect each other. (Pedestrians and Bicyclists)

You’re right on the money 💰! Stevens Point is in the same ⛵ boat. The busiest places for bicycle 🚲 traffic is near the university. Perhaps bicyclists, me included, should pay a bicycle registration fee as well as a wheel tax just like we have to with our cars and trucks. One gets the impression that those that spend our tax dollars have the philosophy that tax money 💰 is a free 🐖 piggy bank that all they have to do is print more 💰 money and it solves the problem. These dreamers should take lessons in fiscal responsibility something which is not taught as a graduation requirement. Instead it’s an elective. That’s why we have the fiscal problems in this country. These plans are great ideas, but these people that proposed these types of plans have to realize that it comes with a cost.

I shouldn’t even say anything since I don’t live in the city “thank God”. From an outside observer who drives through the city , you guys do some strange stuff. You have bike lanes that few people use and your I don’t know what to call them “ sidewalk extensions” that cut into the road are examples of feel good projects that cost a lot of money but don’t really add to anything. Lacrosse decision marking can be summarized to “to build it and they will come”. Problem is no one is showing up.
