The Mississippi River is on its way down, after cresting in La Crosse on Friday night.

The water hit its peak in La Crosse at 8.37 feet — over three feet below the 12-foot flood stage.

Forecasters had predicted the river would drop to 8 feet during the day Monday, but that already happened. It was at 7.8 feet Sunday night.

The water is expected to recede slowly this week, getting down to 7 feet by late Thursday night.

The National Weather Service La Crosse said the river was still rising Sunday night to the south of La Crosse in Lansing, Iowa and Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Lansing’s crest was expected to occur late Sunday evening. In Prairie, the river could rise another foot before cresting Tuesday morning, around 13.5 feet.
