A man was airlifted to a La Crosse hospital after he was hit by a semi near Cashton on Saturday night.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office said the man was walking south on Highway 27 on the northbound shoulder about 9:45 p.m. when he entered the northbound lane of traffic. He was hit by an oncoming semi.

Based on the man’s injuries, which the sheriff’s office said were serious, he was airlifted to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse by GundersenAir.

As a result of the incident, the road was closed until midnight. Traffic was detoured during that time.

An inspector from the Wisconsin State Patrol came to the scene to investigate since a commercial vehicle was involved.

The sheriff’s office said they’re continuing their investigation on what happened.

They said the semi had a functioning dash camera at the time of the incident.

Names of the people involved would be released at a later time they said.
