UW-Eau Claire failing to protect free speech, after professor flips College Republicans’ campaign table

As I See It

Freedom of speech does not mean just speech you like. It actually means protecting voices —especially the ones that you don’t like.

It’s been over a week now since UW-Eau Claire professor, Dr. José Felipe Alvergue. used violence in an effort to intimidate and silence conservative students on campus.

The response from the university has been something like, ‘We support freedom of speech and freedom of expression.’

The professor is on an administrative leave, which, to me, sounds an awful lot like a presumably paid vacation.

This isn’t about politics. This is a test of principle, and UW Eau Claire, you are failing it miserably.

The thug still has his job, and none of his colleagues have used their freedom of speech to publicly condemn his actions or to call for his termination.

If UW-Eau Claire really believes in free speech, it needs to fire Alvergue immediately.

And yet Wisconsinites seem ok with aggressive male behavior. They elected and reelected Rep Van Orden who didn’t like materials on display in a public place.
“Van Orden repeatedly demanded to know who set up the display so he could “teach them a lesson,” she said. She had set up the display but was too afraid of him to tell him, she said.

“He was full on shouting at this point and he kept aggressively shoving the books around,” she said.”

Wow Andy, I completely underestimated you… What a beautiful article and I couldn’t agree more… After the Democratic upheaval last year and with no clear leader in that party?… It’s refreshing and encouraging, to hear you speak in this fashion.

Your “freedom” only extends as far as to not violating others.

Typical dems. They only see their views, think they’re perfect and anyone who thinks differently is an idiot. Soooo sad they can’t see both sides and form an opinion from facts vs emotions. Thank you for writing this Andy.

Good editorial. But why hasn’t WIZM run a hard news story about this UWEC incident?

Today, a search of Alvergue’s name on this site only turns up two editorials written by the same person with no news reporting of the story.

I suggest WIZM stop chasing Brad Pfaff around and start reporting balanced news.
