‘Major delay area’ during Hwy. 16 construction work this summer

Drivers can expect what La Crosse County terms a ‘major delay area’ when road construction begins on Highway 16 this summer.

La Crosse County’s Highway Department said that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation starts work on April 7 on the stretch of roadway between La Crosse Street and Kinney Coulee Road.

Plans call for crews to work on both bridges over the La Crosse River, road surfacing along the length of the work zone, and working on signal upgrades at the intersection of Highway 16 (Losey Boulevard) and La Crosse Street.

The Wisconsin DOT said that the work starts on the Highway 16 bridge over the La Crosse River. During that time, the highway is only going to be open to northbound traffic. Southbound traffic will be detoured along US 53 and I-90.

When work on the intersection takes place, there will be one lane open in each direction with temporary signals.

The project should be finished by late summer, although no specific end date was announced by the DOT.
