Seasonal weight restrictions for county highways throughout La Crosse County start March 7.

In the spring as snow melts, the ground becomes saturated with water which makes it weak and unable to support heavy loads.

La Crosse County Highway Commissioner Joe Langeberg said that the restrictions go into effect at 7 a.m. on March 7 as weight limit signs go into place.

Langeberg said the weight limits are for county trunk highways only. Each governmental body including the state, cities, villages, or towns, are responsible for their own restrictions.

For La Crosse County, the restrictions are:

Total number of axlesMaximum gross weight
Two (2) axles8 Ton (16,000 lbs.)
Three (3) or more axles (straight truck)13 Ton (26,000 lbs.)
Combination Vehicles (tractor & trailer) 18 Ton (36,000 lbs.)

Langeberg said the weight restrictions could go into place sooner if any rain or melting snow increases thawing.

Once the frost has dissipated, the restrictions would be lifted.

The City of Onalaska is another municipality that is enacting weight restrictions on some of its roads beginning March 7.

Effective at 7 a.m., the restrictions are for the following roads:

N. Kinney Coulee Road from 1,200 ft. east of Louyang Avenue to City Limits

Marcou Road

Green Coulee Road

French Road

Emerald Drive East

The city is posting signs regarding the weight restrictions.

Emergency use permits may be issued by the city’s Engineering Department on a case-by-case basis.
