La Crosse woman will be tried this summer for child neglect, in infant’s alleged drug-related death

A trial is now scheduled for June, for a La Crosse woman charged in a child’s death resulting from neglect.
Brittany Basley is expected to be tried after June 16th. The 34-year-old Basley was the mother of the 15-month-old boy, who investigators believe died last year from exposure to fentanyl in a residence.

In court on Monday, Judge Scott Horne spoke about evidence of Basley being tested for drug use.
“Miss Basley had been testing positive for fentanyl, which was the drug that arguably resulted in the death” of the child, said Horne during the court hearing. The child’s father, Lavon Liggins, faces a similar neglect charge.
Basley may have a two-week trial this summer in La Crosse. She had earlier been scheduled for a trial this winter.
Judge Horne heard arguments on Monday dealing with evidence that may be admitted at the trial. He says Basley’s connections to people facing drug charges should have made her more cautious about the child’s welfare.
“That should have triggered, on the part of any parent, an awareness of the dangers that were being created, and the obligation to respond by protecting the child,” said Horne.
A scheduling conference will be held the first week of March.
