UW-La Crosse political science professor, Dr. Anthony Chergosky, in the WIZM studio Friday for La Crosse Talk PM as we kickoff the show breaking news that a La Crosse mayor primary debate is coming, plus the news of a media group laying off or firing local meteorologists.

La Crosse Talk airs weekdays at 6-8 a.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk wherever you get your podcasts.

Began the show talking about WIZM hosting an upcoming La Crosse mayor debate between Ellie McLoone (who will be on La Crosse Talk at 7 a.m. Wednesday), Chris Kahlow, Shaundel Washington-Spivey and Vicki Markussen (who was on La Crosse Talk last week Monday).

After that, we discussed Allen Media perhaps backtracking on laying off meteorologists, including in La Crosse, after public outcry. We also conjured up a strange scenario in what could be their plan to replace weather people with some Weather Channel intern in Atlanta, and what that might look like. Lastly, we simply asked the question, “Do we need local meteorologists?” We can access the weather any time, plus there are nearly a dozen employees at the National Weather Service La Crosse, up on the bluff.

After that, more weather news, as a meteorologist in Milwaukee was fired for expressing their opinion on their personal social media site of Elon Musk’s “Nazi-like salute.”

Lastly, we talked about a “Captain Obvious” statement from the Walgreens CEO, who said people buy less stuff when it’s locked behind glass cases.

I do not like people getting fired for expressing their opinions. I am not sure what Musk intended with his arm but people have way too much time on their hands to comment as some may think I have for writing this.

Nick, You should view the Musk speech in question. Basically, Musk was doing the Tampon Tim Walz routine where he thumps his heart and extends an arm to his audience thanking them from his heart for their support. That is exactly what Musk did (but without the Walz twinkle fingers) and exactly what Musk said.

I would’t have fired the newslady either, but she apparently lacked the maturity to understand (or care) what really happened and her employer felt it reflected poorly on the business. The employer wasn’t wrong. People making these Nazi comparisons are hopelessly ignorant and/or dishonest. Some members of the media are slow to realize people are fed up with the rhetoric and these slow learners are now “seeking other opportunities” (Jim Acosta today fired at CNN the latest example).

The entire WIZM discussion was based on a false premise. Either one of these two could have explained all that in 20 words or less, but instead Chergosky dodged the queston twice. Hilarious, but a missed opportunity to demonstrate some leadership.

I heard the show Friday. You guys were just shooting the breeze, with no real evidence. I am sure WXOW is relying on meteorologists who at least live in state. That being said, local meteorologists rely on: NOAA, The Weather Channel, NWS–La Crosse and Accuweather. No doubt, they have their own equipment, too. I would like to know which meteorologists, if any, were fired. Breeden retired.

Hi Sam — I reviewed multiple TV industry publications and reports prior to the broadcast last Friday, and I reviewed social media posts from those in the weather forecasting industry. These reports indicated that local weather reports for stations owned by Allen Media would be replaced with broadcasts originating from Atlanta. However, due to viewer and advertiser backlash, the company is now reconsidering its decision.
