Wind chills could hit -30 to -40 in Coulee Region on Monday, Tuesday

Some of the coldest weather in the area this season is expected on Martin Luther King Day Monday, and for the day after.

With the extreme cold, the city of La Crosse opened daytime warming shelters over the weekend through Tuesday.

Ironically, the cold weather returned to La Crosse during the weekend, after the two warmest days reported so far this month.

The city recorded highs of 39 on Thursday, and the first 40-plus day of 2025 on Friday, with a high of 47. Friday’s average temperature in La Crosse was 19 degrees above normal.

But, that quickly flipped over the weekend.

According to weather forecasters in La Crosse, wind chills of -20 degrees or lower are expected throughout the region, going as far south as Platteville.

Wind chills at -30 or colder are likely to be common north of La Crosse.

Temperatures in La Crosse could climb to a more normal 20 by Wednesday with 30s possible in La Crosse by the weekend.

The warming shelter will be open these hours:

  • Monday, January 20 from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, January 21 from 8 a.m. – noon

    Somewhere there’s a tree-hugger that says this cold snap is a sure sign of global warming.
