Temper tantrums in Madison: Why voter ID matters

As I See It

The largest state-run daycare is open again. That’s right! The legislative session is underway in Madison, and our lawmakers are already squabbling like toddlers on a sugar high.

In the midst of all this chaos, there’s one issue causing a major temper tantrum. The voter ID law. Some lawmakers want to lock it in the state constitution, so that four activist judges can’t overturn the will of the people.

And let’s be real, those judges have already demonstrated their allegiance to an ideology over Wisconsinites. Ask yourself this: Do you really want to live in a world where we can’t trust the results of our elections?

I don’t.

For any free society to function, it needs three basic pillars: Fair and honest elections, a free and truthful press and a transparent government.

If we can’t get the first one right, the others won’t matter. Our voter ID law was passed by the legislature of the people, by the people, and for the people. It’s time to put an end to the temper tantrums and start acting like reasonable adults.

    Amen, brother.
Can’t get my money from the credit union without an ID.
Drive a car, Airplane travel, nope, unless you have an ID.
Wanna go to Canada where people always say the grass is greener, not unless you have ID.
What else is there to say?

The elections are already free and fair. Attempts at voter fraud are extremely rare and there are already checks in place to prevent it. This is nothing more than an attempt to give legitimacy to cry babies who lose elections on the tax payers dollar.

As I see it, legislators should stop playing games and get back to work.

John Smith let me explain it to you. The existence of “voting fraud” is defined in Wisconsin statutes. Statutes can be changed by the WI legislature and be tampered with locally impacting local elections. There are cities in Wisconsin that have very large populations of foreign born immigrants in varying states of non-citizenship. Furthermore, Dem run states (CA, MN, IL, etc) have all shown their hands by taking steps to amend their statutes preventing the requirement that an I.D. be presented to vote, thereby opening the door for non-citizens to vote.

However, once enshrined in the WI constitution, the requirement for a voter I.D. becomes a bedrock part of the voting mechanism and beyond the easy reach of state and local partisan politics.

Over 70% of Wisconsin voters convincingly approved of a November ballot question in a high turnout election in favor of preventing non-citizens from voting. The public is clearly in favor of shoring up the voting system. The Republican led WI legislature is doing the peoples’ work by pursuing this matter.

Kudos to the legislature and to Mr. Parrish.

    Andy Parrish,

Your column is a breath of common sense at WIZM, love reading it everytime “I see it.” Why would anyone be against voter id? Only logical answer…..to cheat.

There are those that say requiring an I.D. to vote is voter suppression. Hogwash! How dumb do they think the electorate is? The public and private sector require I.D. in countless ways. I recently saw a reporter asking people in an low income urban setting if they had an I.D.. Those interviewed were mostly people of color, men and woman, and across the spectrum in age. All of them said they had I.D, had no problem getting I.D., and thought of it as a necessity in todays society. Wake up people. The only reason, the only reason to oppose Voter I.D. is to undermine the security of our elections!
