La Crosse County has one of Wisconsin’s lowest property tax rates, according to administrator Klekamp
How low can you go, when it comes to paying taxes? According to recent figures, La Crosse County has lower property taxes per person than only three other Wisconsin counties.
The county administrator, Jane Klekamp, tells WIZM’s Rick Solem that the amount of county property taxes collected works out to about $307 per taxpayer in La Crosse County.
Klekamp says La Crosse County has been 5th lowest per capita this past year in property taxes, until the most recent numbers were announced by county officials.
“I can remember us being 6th lowest per capita for property taxes, and then we went to 5th, and when we crunched the numbers this year, we are now 4th lowest for the tax rate, for individuals,” says Klekamp.
Klekamp says the $307 average in La Crosse County is just over half of the statewide average of $583 paid by individuals in taxes to a county.
“It’s rare that taxes are going to decrease,” said Klekamp, “but our rate is lower than in other places, and I think that’s the benefit of it.”

Sounds like they’re preparing La Crosse County taxpayers for a tax increase. When has government lowered taxes after praising how low our tax rates are? They believe you are never paying enough.

I agree the amount of property taxes levied per county resident is the correct way of looking at this. The LX School District instead references the “mil rate” and tries to convince the public that school taxes are going down. The District conveniently ignores the fact that property values (the tax base) have soared and school taxes continue to rise, irrespective of the mil rate trend.
It would be interesting to see some analysis about the county tax levy being below the state average. We can’t just assume it is because they are spending that much less per capita than 68 other counties so some additional information would be helpful.
