La Crosse teachers’ union co-president Jill Schams on school start times, Thanksgiving foods
La Crosse Education Association co-president Jill Schams joined La Crosse Talk on Monday to discuss what might change with the school district starting two weeks earlier, plus when to begin the school day and year-round school. We also had to talk best and worst foods on the Thanksgiving Day table.
La Crosse Talk airs weekdays at 6-8 a.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk PM wherever you get your podcasts.
The school start time discussion was two-fold. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction recently granted the La Crosse School District an exemption from the state mandate that classes must begin on or after Sept. 1.
La Crosse loses about $200,000 a year bussing private school students in the summer, before that date. Those schools aren’t held to the same state rules, yet the public schools have to pay to bus them.
We also talked about when classes should begin in the morning, as the district is toying with the idea of changing that for certain grades.
We began, however, talking about the best and worst foods for Thanksgiving.
