As I See It
As I See It, When would be the best time to begin Rotary Lights?
We’re well into November, and the elections are behind us. Around the region, the signs of the holiday season are starting to appear. Downtown La Crosse has its big lighted snowflakes in place on the streetlights, and the Rotary Lights display is being assembled in Riverside Park. That’s a 30-year tradition now, with a traditional date for the display to be switched on. The day after Thanksgiving. I see that Madison already has one of its parks lit up for the Christmas season. It makes me bring up the question, for discussion. Is Thanksgiving weekend too long to wait before the holiday lights come on? Under this year’s calendar, the Rotary Lights won’t open until the very latest day possible, November 29th. They definitely do a great job, but would most folks like to see the park lighted up earlier? The schedule is set for this year, but since Christmas has become a two-month celebration for much of the U.S., maybe it’s something to be talked about for future years. Still plenty of time for families to decorate their own homes and lawns in the meantime. I’m Brad Williams, on WIZM.

What many people do not realize, Including many who called themselves , is that the Christmas season starts Christmas Day and ends in January (the 12 days of Christmas) at the time of Epiphany. The 28 days or four weeks prior to Christmas is the season of Advent. Lighting up Riverside Park after Thanksgiving is acceptable, not before.

To clarify, the season of Advent starts for Sundays before Christmas. Season of advent begins December 1, 3 days after the Thanksgiving holiday. Does that answer your question Brad?
