Adam Hoffer, director of excise tax policy at the Tax Foundation in La Crosse, in studio for two very different topics — substituting a gas tax for a mileage one, plus the ridiculous costs paid to NFL, NBA for broadcast rights.

La Crosse Talk airs weekdays at 6-9 a.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk PM wherever you get your podcasts.

Began the conversation talking sports economics, which is what Hoffer taught for over a decade at UW-La Crosse. The first half of the conversation was about NIL deals. After that, we got into the TV market and the extraordinary costs companies like Amazon and ABC are paying for NFL and NBA rights and what that might do to consumers, who may be priced out of being able to subscribe to these services to watch.

After that, we got into the dying gas tax that’s used to pay for fixing the roads but isn’t keeping up because of more efficient cars, plus electric and hybrid vehicles. Hoffer has researched what some states are beginning to do, by charging a per-mile tax.
