American Countess leads the 2022 parade of big boats to La Crosse

La Crosse welcomes its first big boat of the 2022 season to Riverside Park, with the arrival of the American Countess on Sunday and back again Thursday

The Countess is part of the American Queen family of paddlewheelers, which travel the Upper Mississippi River. It’s headed upriver from St. Louis to Minneapolis, and is scheduled to return to La Crosse headed south Thursday.

Passengers on the cruise boat were able to take bus rides and other tours around the city while the Countess was docked. Several other paddlewheeler cruises have scheduled stops in La Crosse through October.

The first-ever visit by the Viking Cruise Line to La Crosse was scheduled this week, but is postponed until Aug. 18.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
