A visitor from out-of-town got attention on Pearl Street yesterday, when he went to buy coffee and a book about La Crosse history.

That customer was Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, calling attention to two local businesses which have received Bounceback Grants from the state. Evers purchased the history book at Pearl Street Books, next to Jules Coffee House.

Speaking to local reporters at the bookstore, the governor said each of those businesses got $10,000 in grants.

“It was a huge, small investment,” Evers said. “Huge for the store, small investment. We’ve used our ARPA money for that, and we’ve had over 45-hundred people across the state” qualifying for the funding.

The Fisher family has owned Jules for just over a year.  Jenny Fisher says they came to Jules at a time when customers were ready to resume their usual habits after COVID-19.

“We were real careful with our customers, but people were ready to come back last year,” she says. “We just really found that people were ready to be back here and interacting with people.”

A few weeks ago, Evers paid a similar visit to a new record store near the cathedral on 6th Street.

As of early May this year, close to 100 businesses just in La Crosse County had used bounceback funding to open their doors or expand business.
