Apartment fire causes damage at former Bakalars building

An apartment fire on South Avenue in La Crosse leaves two people injured.

The Lofts at 2219 South Avenue received severe water damage and moderate fire damage, after the fire broke out in one apartment, around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

All the occupants evacuated the building after the fire alarms went off. Within minutes, 26 firefighters were on the scene.

The apartments are in the former Bakalars sausage factory, which was converted to housing five years ago.

One apartment suffered moderate fire damage and severe water damage. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Two residents were treated at the hospital.
