The main road through Riverside Park in La Crosse will be shut down for a couple of months, in order to build the new levee landing to be used by Viking Cruise Lines.

Jim Flottmeyer of the La Crosse Parks and Rec. Department told the park board Thursday that construction of the landing is scheduled to start around Feb. 1.

Veterans Memorial Drive, the loop through the park, will be closed to traffic for about 60 days, so heavy equipment for the project can be put on the road.

State Street will remain open into the park, to the point where it loops around the circle reserved for the eagle sculpture, which is still being refurbished.

Viking begins cruises up the Mississippi River this summer. The landing should be ready in time for the first Viking cruise to stop in La Crosse in July.
