As I See It

The end of an era in La Crosse radio

It is the end of an era in local radio today. Longtime Mid-West Family DJ Samantha Strong officially retires at the end of her show today. Sam leaves our company after 35 years, first on Z-93 and currently on Classic Hits 94.7. I had the pleasure of working with Sam and partner Keith Carr for 20 years when she was on Z-93. I can tell you she is as nice and sweet as she sounds on the air. A truly nice and patient person. Sam has literally been waking up generations of listeners in La Crosse. Some who rode the bus listening to Z-93 are now driving the bus, or are now teachers leading their students on a tour of our radio building. That’s one way to measure time. Now Same Strong can measure time differently as she begins her retirement. After 35 years of waking up before the sun, Sam can finally sleep in. Over the years, Sam has been bringing listeners features like Tabloid Trash and Pizza Doctors trivia. I can’t imagine how many free lunches she has given out. Sam has been deeply involved in our community, things like the Chili Cook-off and participating in countess parades, interviewing celebrities and keeping us informed and entertained. What a ride. Thanks for all the memories Sam. It has been a pleasure. Cheers!
