Western Technical College in La Crosse announced Thursday it would be forgiving nearly $740,000 in debt for 913 students.

The school will use funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to cancel debt for eligible students.

Those who qualify would have outstanding balances these terms:

  • Spring 2020
  • Summer 2020
  • Fall 2020
  • Spring 2021

The 913 students will have financial holds removed from their accounts. They may be allowed to enroll in further classes.

“COVID-19 created financial hardships for so many in our community, and it impacted how students could attend college,” Western President Roger Stanford said in a statement. “We hope this funding allows some of these individuals a path back to their career goals.”

Those eligible will receive a letter in the coming days. Western’s Fall 2021 term begins Sept. 7.
