County redistricting plans could start soon, but old districts will remain for 2022 spring election

The La Crosse County administrator has confirmed what county board members already learned last month…their board districts won’t change before the next election in April.

Steve O’Malley says the Wisconsin Counties Association wants counties to delay their redistricting, because the 2020 census results aren’t ready yet.

O’Malley says the numbers might be available by mid-August, but that’s too late to have new county districts drawn up for candidates to take out papers in December.

O’Malley hopes to have a redistricting committee named by the next county board meeting later this month.

The administrator believes the census troubles probably won’t hamper redistricting for the legislature before the fall of 2022.
