Along with a new mayor, the La Crosse city council will swear in six new members on April 20.

Before that happens, however, one last council meeting Thursday night with the current members.

One of 42 items on the agenda, is renovating the council chamber itself.

“It needed to be done because of the asbestos in there,” council member Andrea Richmond said, adding that they’re going to approve the project.

Asked, jokingly, if the renovations will include big screen TVs and nice recliners in there, Richmond said, “There are going to be TVs, big screen TVs but no recliners. We want to make sure everybody’s awake. … Improved lighting and so on. It should be nice.”

Richmond added that she did request new chairs, since the ones in there have been in there since the 1970s.

Four companies had the opportunity to bid on the project. Three made bids. Market and Johnson’s was about $36,000 cheaper than the next group.

Come on North La Crosse, Richmond has to go! Asbestos doesn’t need to be removed if it’s not disturbed.

A million here, a million there, pretty soon we’re talking about some real money!
