Fire damages La Crosse apartment building

One apartment has moderate fire and smoke damage and surrounding units suffered water damage after a fire along Avon St. in La Crosse Monday morning.

Fire crews were called to 1208 Avon St. at 6:55 a.m. The La Crosse Fire Department said they were on the scene in less than four minutes and met with thick black smoke coming from a second-story apartment in a multiple-family building.

Firefighters searched for possible victims and extinguished the flames within five minutes. Everyone exited safely and nobody was hurt.

The La Crosse Fire Department Fire Investigation Division is examining the situation.

Assisting on scene was Tri-State Ambulance, Xcel Energy, City of La Crosse Police
Department, La Crosse County Emergency Dispatch Center, and the Red Cross for the
housing needs of the displaced tenants.
