March deadline for expired Minnesota IDs to be renewed

Published

on

The deadline is approaching for Minnesota residents that were granted extensions to renew their driver’s licenses and state IDs due to COVID-19.

Those IDs expired in the past year but remained valid as a result of legislation signed by Gov. Tim Walz have to be renewed by March 31, according to the Department of Vehicle Services (DVS).

Letters will be sent to about 300,000 residents with standard driver’s licenses or IDs that expire between March 13, 2020-Feb. 28, 2021 and still need to renew.

Anyone’s ID that expires on or after March 1, 2021 must renew by the issued due date.

The deadline for commercial driver’s licenses to renew is Feb. 28.

Those who don’t renew on time will lose their driving privileges until they renew.

Applications for a Real ID or enhanced driver’s license must be done in person. Beginning Oct. 1, 2021, Minnesotans cannot use their standard driver’s license or ID card to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities.
