La Crosse is now No. 2 on two New York Times list for growing cases of COVID-19 across the country.

La Crosse ranks second in “metro areas with the greatest number of new cases, relative to their population, in the last two weeks.”

Farmington, MO., is first on the list at 72.3 daily cases per 100,000. La Crosse sits at 70.8.

Other Wisconsin cities on the list: 7. Platteville (48.6), 8. Appleton (48.4), 16. Stevens Point (45.7), 19. Green Bay (44.8).

La Crosse is also second for “metro areas where new cases are rising the fastest, on a population-adjusted basis.” La Crosse was on top of this list last week.

Now, it’s behind Pine Bluff, Ark., at a 319 change (from 267 to 547) per 100,000. La Crosse’s change in the past week is 312 (from 464 to 890).

Other Wisconsin cities on the list: 3. Oshkosh/Neenah (243), 7. Platteville (191), 10. Appleton (179), 20. Sheboygan (126).

Winona, Minn., is also on the list. Winona sits 15th with a 156 change (94 to 173).

It’s unclear if Winona made the list due to the 100 cases reported Friday. All indications are that most of those cases were due to a backlog of weeks to months.
