Downtown injury incident still being studied by La Crosse police

La Crosse police are continuing to sort out what happened to one man on 3rd Street late last week. 

R.J. Johnson ended up with a broken leg, and investigators are reviewing videos and interviewing witnesses to learn if Johnson fell or was knocked to the ground during an incident involving other people. 

The incident occurred late Thursday or early Friday, in the area of Bronco’s bar and Big Al’s.

Friends of Johnson raised have $25,000 through a Go Fund Me campaign to help pay his medical bills, and some who know him have described the incident as a “hate crime.”

Police say the Johnson case will be referred to the district attorney for investigation, but DA Tim Gruenke says he doesn’t know much about the case yet.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area.
