La Crosse’s green bubblers take the summer off

Why haven’t La Crosse’s iconic green drinking fountains been turned on yet for the summer? 

For the same reason the city swimming pools and many other things have been closed–the coronavirus. 

City utility manager Bernie Lenz says the bubblers will stay off for the duration of the pandemic, because it might be too easy for the virus to spread with so many people using the machines, and they can’t be cleaned easily between uses. 

A news release calls the shutdown a ‘small inconvenience’ to protect the community’s health. 

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area.
