Area of Rose Street rezoned for apartments

One north La Crosse neighborhood may get some new apartments soon.

The city’s judiciary committee has rezoned a business area on the south end of Rose Street, for multi-family housing.

Barb Janssen represents the neighborhood on the city council, and says she spoke with La Crosse Police Chief Shawn Kudron about drug issues in the area.

“I believe this is a better option than anything else that we’re looking at, and it’s the most feasible,” Janssen said.

Two committee members opposed the rezoning, saying the prospective developers haven’t shown the city enough information about what the new building would look like.

One of them, Jessica Olson, says the proposal brought to the city judiciary committee sets a bad precedent, that “you can come into City Hall empty-handed, and promise something’s gonna be wonderful … and then suddenly, you’re entitled to have your zoning approved because, well, anything you do must be better than what’s there.”

The housing plan will be brought to the full city council next week.
