La Crosse police not stopping drivers to check for “papers”

Since many states have ‘stay-at-home’ rules in place because of COVID-19, stories have been going around about police stopping drivers to see if they have a reason to be on the street. 

Is anything like that happening in La Crosse?    

“Absolutely not,” says La Crosse police Capt. Jason Melby. “It’s unequivocally false, the La Crosse Police Department is NOT stopping people to see if they’ve got valid business that they’re going to or coming from.”

Melby says they will stop cars if they see that a violation has been committed. 

The captain also says you may be seeing one police officer per squad car more often in La Crosse, during the outbreak of COVID-19. 

Melby tells WIZM that shortages of personnel as a result of virus concerns have led the department to make single assignments in cars.
