Elected officials bungle election plans

It is election day. That was anything but certain until yesterday afternoon. Governor Tony Evers announced a postponement of today’s election, a decision quickly overturned by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. So I guess we are supposed to go to the polls today after all. What a mess this has been from the start. Governor Evers initially refused to postpone the election, then claimed he didn’t have the authority to do so, then did it anyway. In making that announcement yesterday, Evers insisted there is no good answer to this problem. He is right about that, but there were plenty of opportunities to get this right. Evers ordered the Legislature into session to consider adopting a mail-in only vote. Legislative leaders called the meeting to order, then adjourned with no debate or action. No solutions. Just a thumbing of their collective noses.  Wisconsin remains the only state scheduled to hold an April election that is still going ahead with those plans, despite the coronavirus, despite the order we stay at home and not congregate in large groups. Voters are left to choose between their health, and exercising their constitutional rights. No doubt no matter the outcome of today’s election, there will be complaints and lawsuits. Our lawmakers dropped the ball on this one, and couldn’t have bungled this any more.
