Wisconsin lawmakers fiddle while Rome burns

They can’t have it both ways. Legislative leaders in Madison have said they don’t want Wisconsin’s April 7 election postponed amid the coronavirus outbreak. So Governor Tony Evers is calling on the Legislature to act quickly so that every registered voter in the state could be mailed an absentee ballot. Turns out they don’t like that idea either. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has panned Evers’ plan, calling it “hoax” and a “fantasy.” He also calls the Governor a liar and says the idea is not logistically feasible. True, there is little time, but whose fault is that? Wisconsin legislators have been fiddling while Rome is burning, refusing to cut short their months-long vacation and get back to Madison to deal with this crisis. To preserve the integrity of the upcoming election, and to avoid people gathering at the polls on election day, they could have made changes to the election weeks ago.  And given their rhetoric, it doesn’t seem like they have any plans to return to Madison and do their jobs now. So it looks like its up to us. You still have time to request an absentee ballot by mail from your local clerk. That way you don’t have to make the choice between your health and your right to vote.
