Gundersen doctor optimistic about “fast-track” search for coronavirus vaccine
Scientists are quickly trying to develop a vaccine against the coronavirus, but the process could take weeks or months.
That’s according to Gundersen pediatrician Raj Naik, who tells WIZM’s La Crosse Talk that vaccines usually require years of development.
“It’s still going to take some time,” said Naik. “It’s going to take still many months to get effective results.”
Naik says the biggest concern about coronavirus is that it’s a new illness, for which people have not developed an immunity.
Several foreign countries have approved actions to limit travel or otherwise isolate people who might have the virus.
Naik recalls that one of the worst pandemics in recent history, the Spanish flu of 1918, led to about 50 million deaths, or about 5 per cent of the world’s population at the time.
