A Sparta man was killed and five other people were hurt in a two-car crash, which occurred Saturday night, west of Tomah, Wis.

Two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided on Highway 16, shortly before 8 p.m.

The driver who died, 37-year-old Matthew Edwards, was alone in his car.

Five people in the other vehicle, all ranging in age from 17 to 19, had life-threatening injuries.

The crash closed Highway 16 for more than three hours on Saturday.

Until this week, Monroe County had no traffic deaths in 2020, compared to six last year.

Several agencies responded to the accident, or are investigating how it happened.

Investigators have found no evidence of drugs or alcohol contributing to the accident.

The crash occurred early in the evening, before snow came through the area.
