La Crosse County is still looking into a series of drug overdoses, which occurred in the region late last month.

Eight overdoses were reported in just one weekend, and county medical examiner Tim Candahl said it could take several weeks to determine how those cases happened.

Candahl counted four overdose deaths in the area so far in 2020, but he said the total for last year actually reflects a decrease.

There were 22 overdose deaths in La Crosse County in 2019, down three from the previous year.

Candahl added that this area may see more overdoses than other Wisconsin cities of similar size, such as Wausau, because of La Crosse’s closeness to the interstate system.

Heroin and fentanyl may turn out to be responsible for the high number of area drug overdoses this year.
